At the ceremony of the 14th Anniversary of Mae Fah Luang University, 4th year Thai Language and Culture Student, Li Ling Xiao Yan (Ling) was presented with an Honourable Certificate for her Excellence in Promoting Mae Fah Luang University. Earlier this year, on the 11th of February 2012, Ling had participated in the International Tertiary Education Speech Contest in Honour of His Majesty the King, arranged by the Chulalongkorn University Alumni Association Under Patronage of His Majesty the King. This event was arranged as an auspicious occasion to celebrate and honour the King of Thailand’s 84th birthday and was held at the Anoma Hotel in Bangkok.

24 contestants entered the competition, with students from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Germany and USA challenging each other for the first prize. Each had to present an oratorical speech on topic of, “The Royal Initiated Projects help Thai people live well” and an impromptu speech on the topic, “Perseverance brings success”. MFU student Li Ling Xiao Yan was awarded with the first prize trophy, presented to her by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and a study contribution of 20,000 baht.

Talking with Ling after receiving the Honourable Certificate from Assoc. Prof.  Dr. Vanchai Sirichana, President of Mae Fah Luang University, Ling wanted to thank both of her Thai Language and Culture Program lecturers, Arjan Suttha Rattanasakand Arjan Panwadee Rattanasak, for having groomed her well. Ling mentioned that a competition such as this is the best kind of training for a foreigner wanting to learn Thai. Through this kind of competition, particularly in having to use royal language, Ling’s normal Thai abilities have also benefited.

Ling is nearing the end of her bachelor’s studies and is considering what to do next. Her dream has been to become a diplomatic officer in the Chinese Embassy, Bangkok, but she is also interested in further studies. Her feeling after studying at our university for almost 4 years is one of love and admiration.

It is students like Ling who are the best role models for the junior generations of students, either Thai or foreign. Her dedication to study has led her to be the top student in the Thai Language and Culture Programme, and her commitment to extra curricular activities such as this competition has enabled her to be awarded with the well deserved Honourable Certificate for Promoting Mae Fah Luang University.
